Treating Wrinkles with Restylane and Perlane

Many people are looking for that slightly fuller shape for their chin. Just a touch of additional volume can make an enormous difference in your appearance. Or perhaps you want a rounder, more sensuous line along your cheeks? And lip fashions are always changing with the times. Q-Med has three approved products within facial esthetics that together can meet various correctional needs. Our products RESTYLANE, RESTYLANE Fine Lines and PERLANE offer you a natural safe and long-lasting beauty lift. No other injectable implant can offer this concept.

RESTYLANE
is intended for wrinkle correction and lip enhancements

RESTYLANE TOUCH
is used for correcting thin superficial lines, for example around the mouth, forehead lines and smile lines

PERLANE
can be used for shaping facial contours, such as cheeks and chin, correcting deep folds, and for volume augmentation of the lips.

A natural, safe and long-lasting beauty lift
Impressions of beauty change over time, as do our faces as we age. One of the great advantages with the Q-Med Esthetics products RESTYLANE, RESTYLANE TOUCH and PERLANE is that they are long-lasting but not permanent. You always have the choice to continue or change the combination of treatments, and the procedure can be repeated as often as you like. You are always in charge of your looks.

Pure and safe products from Sweden
Q-Med Esthetics products contain the body's own natural material, hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is present in all living organisms. In the skin it creates volume, resulting in a healthy and vital appearance. Q-Med has invented a method for binding together the molecules (stabilization) in hyaluronic acid. In this way we can produce a unique and transparent gel called NASHA from natural hyaluronic acid.

NASHA stands for Non Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. NASHA is a safe implant for the body, and it is the base in all our products. Since our products are totally non-animal there is no risk of transmitting disease or eliciting allergic reactions if you are sensitive to common foods, such as beef, chicken and eggs.

Tissue Tailored Concept
This is our “Tissue Tailored Concept” - where each product matches the tissue structure at various levels of skin depth. The difference between the products is the gel particle size. Dr. Sabean chooses the product, or a combination, that best matches the tissue structure needs you have to help achieve an optimal result for you.

Natural beauty for as long as you like
How long a treatment holds its effect is very individual. This depends on many factors, such as your age, skin type, life style and muscle activity, as well as on the injection technique. Dr. Nicholas Lowe of Los Angeles and London recently completed some longevity studies and Perlane lasts an average of 8-18 months in the naso-labial lines and 8-12 months in the lip. Carruthers et al have shown that Restylane in the glabellar skin lines between the eyes lasts an average of four months, but an average of 8 months when it is administered in conjunction with Botox. Q-Med Esthetics gel particles are absorbed so slowly that you have ample time for maintenance treatment. As the gel breaks down, water takes its place. The less concentrated the gel becomes, the more water it is able to bind. These facts are the main reasons that Q-Med Esthetic treatments last so long. When totally absorbed the gel disappears unnoticed from the body. Most patients choose to have a follow-up treatment six to twelve months after an initial treatment of wrinkles or facial contouring. After lip treatments, a follow-up is normally needed after six to twelve months.

Impressions of beauty change over time - as do our faces when we age. Smoothing out folds and wrinkles by adding volume can make an enormous difference in your appearance. This can now be carried out without the use of foreign substances.

Each of the Q-Med Esthetics products, RESTYLANE, RESTYLANE TOUCH or PERLANE is specially designed for different purposes and effects. For optimal results a combination of our products is often used. For wrinkle treatments no pain relief is generally necessary, however it can easily be arranged at your request.

Fast and safe method with immediate results
When treating wrinkles or folds the crystal-clear NASHA (hyaluronic acid) gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very thin needle. The injected gel gives natural volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. A treatment takes about 30 minutes and the results can be seen immediately. The method is fast and safe and leaves no scars or other traces on the face. Because NASHA is not from animal or human sources, and is chemically identical to human hyaluronic acid, a skin test is not needed and this means that you can have the treatment done immediately.

Depending on the effects desired, an initial treatment and follow-up appointment two weeks later, is usually maintained with occasional follow-up treatments. Together with Doctor Sabean, you plan regular future visits to maintain a good result. Follow-up treatments normally require a smaller amount of the product. Most patients choose to have a follow-up treatment six to twelve months after an initial treatment of wrinkles. Clinical trials show that RESTYLANE is effective for up six to eighteen months after the treatment of wrinkles, depending on location.

Through its products Q-Med Esthetics/ Medicis offers continuing beauty treatment where the foundation is laid at the first treatment appointment.

Professionals' opinions

"Perlane, which is hyaluronic acid (Q-Med, Uppsala, Sweden), remains where it is injected long enough to produce adequate augmentation in the lips for 12 months and in the nasolabial folds for 18 months, said Dr. Lowe…"
Skin & Allergy News, July 2002:Vol 33;No 7

"…PERLANE provides a more durable esthetic improvement than Hylaform®, as reflected by significant treatment differences in favour of PERLANE for at least 6 months post-treatment."
"The present findings suggest that less frequent repeat treatments will be required with PERLANE than with Hylaform®. …it would appear that PERLANE is likely to offer the advantage over Hylaform of reduced treatment costs…"

"Less injection volume was required for "optimal cosmetic result" with hyaluronic acid gel than with bovine collagen…"
"…RESTYLANE provided a more durable aesthetic correction than Zyplast®, as indicated by significant treatment differences in favor of RESTYLANE that were evident as early as 2 months after treatment and were maintained for at least 6 months after treatment."

Post-treatment

Immediately after the treatment you can expect slight redness, swelling, tenderness, an itching sensation in the treated area, and rarely bruising. This is a normal result of the injection. The inconvenience is temporary and generally disappears in a day or two. If the inconvenience continues or if other reactions occur, please contact your physician. Enhanced lips may swell for up to three days on rare occasions.

Do I need to avoid anything after a treatment?

  • Avoid touching the treated area within the following 6 hours. After that, a light make-up can be applied and the area can be gently washed with soap and water.
  • Until the initial swelling and redness have resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. solarium and sunbathing) or extreme cold.
  • If you are using aspirin or any similar medication, be aware that these may increase the bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

Side-Effects

After the injection some common injection-related reactions may occur, such as swelling, redness, pain, itching, discoloration and tenderness at the implant site. They typically resolve spontaneously within one to two days after injection into the skin.

Other types of reactions are very rare, but about one in every 2,000 treated patients have experienced localized reactions thought to be of a hypersensitivity nature. These have usually consisted of swelling at the implant site, sometimes affecting the surrounding tissues.  If this happens, it can be treated with local hyaluronidase injections to dissolve the hyaluronic acid and slowly eliminate the reaction.

Redness, tenderness and rarely acne-like formations have also been reported. These reactions have either started a few days after injection or after a delay of two to four weeks and have generally been described as mild to moderate and self-limiting, with an average duration of two weeks.
