Joel A. Sabean, M.D.
Dermatology

Dr. Sabean is a warm and caring physician, who trained for many years to become a Board-Certified dermatologist, qualified to diagnose and treat the vast array of skin conditions and diseases - medically, surgically or with laser therapy and to do many cosmetic procedures to treat and rejuvenate aging skin and laser procedures for lesion removal and skin cancer treatment as alternatives to surgery. He has been in solo practice in the Portland area for more than twenty-five years and is affiliated with Maine Medical Center. He is also an Instructor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Vermont. Locally he has been featured in the media regularly regarding skin cancer, psoriasis, acne and other subjects. Nationally, he has been selected as a speaker and consultant for several pharmaceutical companies. Our office was also recently chosen as a National Training Center for Botox by Allergan to help train other physicians.

Growing up in New England, he thanks his parents, Irene and Don, for all their support and for instilling within him his desire to learn, his sense of humor, his moral values and his easy-going manner. When he was only twelve, he became the youngest Eagle Scout in the country. Then at age sixteen he graduated from Weston High School in Weston, Massachusetts and went through Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa in only three years. At age nineteen, he commenced his medical training at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, Vermont. After receiving his medical degree, he took his internship at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, after which he served as a physician in the Air Force for two years. It was there in the sunny Southwest, where the sun wreaks havoc with the skin, that Dr. Sabean developed his passion for Dermatology. Therefore, when Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center offered him a Dermatology residency, he was pleased to accept. He felt especially fortunate to train there, as it had one of the few Dermatology inpatient units in the country. During these years in residency, he worked weekends running an emergency room at a near-by hospital in Vermont to help support his young family. After those exhausting years, with joy and anticipation, Dr. Sabean and his family located in the Portland area in their beloved New England. He has been very, very happily married to Karen Schuyler of State College, Pennsylvania for 35 years. She has been instrumental in setting up and helping guide the practice throughout the years. They have two grown children.

Debbie Libby – Office Manager: Debbie has been with our practice for six years as our office manager. She graduated from Southern Maine Technical College and resides in Windham, Maine with her husband Allen. Prior to joining our practice, she lived in Europe for nine years and was employed as a sales area manager for a multi-national company. She has two daughters, Elizabeth, in Pullayup, Washington and Rachel in Kingsburg, California and she is the proud grandmother of five grandchildren.

Priscilla Schuyler - Medical Esthetician: Priscilla is a graduate of The Catherine Hinds Institute of Medical Esthetics, the only program of its kind in the country, in Boston. She brings her extensive knowledge, expertise, compassion and love of people to our practice. She was raised in Cape Elizabeth, attended Westbrook College, was an Interior Designer, Personal Fitness Trainer and Nutrition Counselor prior to pursuing her career as a Medical Esthetician. She lives in Southern Maine with her two wonderful children.

Brenda Beaulieu: Brenda has been with the practice for a number of years, starting as a medical transcriptionist working from her home and for the last several years as a receptionist and medical assistant. She has a Bachelors Degree in English from the University of Maine at Orono and has completed additional studies at Southern Maine Technical College in biology. She resides in South Portland, Maine, with her husband Robert, and daughter Rachel.

Joy Rockwell: Joy has been with our practice for several years. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. She is versatile in all aspects of the office including skin care products and services. Her smile and enthusiasm are infectious. Joy lives in Gorham with her husband Mike and daughter Samantha.

Jennifer Vose: Jen has been with us part-time for several years. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice, has many years experience in the healthcare field and lives in Portland with her husband Tom, daughter Gretchen and son Thomas Jeffrey.
